Summary

Four American debutantes attend a renowned Paris cotillion in #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel's captivating new novel。 It's the summer of 1959 and the Palace of Versailles is hosting an event that will make history。 It is an exclusive dusk to dawn ball in which a select group of American and French debutantes will be presented to international society and royalty。 Four young women, all with something to prove, receive what some see as the invitation of a lifetime。 Amelia Alexander, who hopes to eventually attend law school, hesitates to participate in what she sees as an archaic and privileged tradition。 But her indomitable widowed mother, Jane, who's struggled financially and sacrificed for a career, encourages her to attend。 Jane would do anything for Amelia to have the chance at happily ever after。 Felicity Smith is equally uncertain about the ball。 Although her family is prominent in the Dallas social scene, Felicity prefers to keep to herself, avoiding the older sister who torments her。 But to get out of her sister's shadow, Felicity decides to accept。 If it's a success, the tables will have turned at last。 For Caroline Taylor, the beautiful ingénue and daughter of Hollywood legends, the ball is an irresistible opportunity。 But an unexpected heartbreak just before she leaves for France gets things off to a bad start。 Then there's Samantha Walker, an art history major with an overprotective father。 Her excitement about the invitation is overshadowed by the emotional and physical effects of a past tragedy that still haunts her。 For all these young women, Paris and one transcendent night will change their lives forever。 Bestselling author Danielle Steel extends an invitation to all, in The Ball at Versailles。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I am pretty disappointed in the character representation of Felicity。 Why couldn’t we have a plus size character and her main character trait be that she was smart? I don’t see why the whole book we had to constantly be reminded of how much weight she could lose and that she likes sweets。 The book was set in 1958, but it seems like it was written back then too。 I thought that the book would focus more on the actual ball, but it turned out to be just a sliver of the plot。 I found everything just I am pretty disappointed in the character representation of Felicity。 Why couldn’t we have a plus size character and her main character trait be that she was smart? When four young debutantes from the United States are invited to the Palace of Versailles for the event of the century, they will be presented to international society and royalty。 They are each assigned an escort that speaks English。 Each of the girls has hurtles to overcome in order to get to Paris。 For each of these women, the ball will change their life forever。This is a wonderful story about challenges and about growing up in society。 Wonderful characters and a great plot!

3。5* Pretty interesting story but hard to follow in the audible reading because transition between characters was too subtle。

A whole lot of fluff and not much substance。 Very flat。 I finished it because I kept hoping it would get more interesting, but。。。。

Captivating。 I loved reading this。 It had shades of Steel’s much earlier work which I enjoyed though it felt a bit rushed at times。 Many parts were similar to her much shorter 2006 novel ‘Coming Out’。

Four excellent stories wrapped into one! While I don’t usually read any historical novels, this was a winner。

Christine

I like it, but there were 4 girls involved。 The story talked heavily on only two girls。。。。disappointed in that。 There should be another book to this to finish it off。

The Ball at Versailles by Danielle Steel is an interesting novel about different women whose lives intertwine in a ball at Versailles。 This book chronicles their lives before and after this ball。 Readers of this author should enjoy this book。 I found it a bit hard to connect with and read。 I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations。 These opinions are entirely my own。

Thought this was a great story。 Slightly different from the usual romance, and a little longer longer than her 260-280 pages which I liked。

The Ball at Versailles is another great book in Danielle Steel's library。 It is rich in descriptions of a time gone by, where debutantes were presented on the marriage market, both here and abroad。 It follows Samantha, Amelia, Felicity and Caroline。 From vastly different backgrounds, these young women were invited to a debutante ball held at Versailles。 This event would have far-reaching consequences and forge new friendships。Danielle Steel is a gifted writer; she draws beautiful pictures with h The Ball at Versailles is another great book in Danielle Steel's library。 It is rich in descriptions of a time gone by, where debutantes were presented on the marriage market, both here and abroad。 It follows Samantha, Amelia, Felicity and Caroline。 From vastly different backgrounds, these young women were invited to a debutante ball held at Versailles。 This event would have far-reaching consequences and forge new friendships。Danielle Steel is a gifted writer; she draws beautiful pictures with her writings and one gets a sense of inclusion。 It's like being a fly on the wall, or having the perfect seat in a production。 I loved it!5 stars 。。。more

Easy , fast read

I liked this latest Danielle Steel book。 It focuses on 4 American debutantes that get invited to the first Ball being held at Versailles palace。 Each debutante comes from a different family situation and of course love becomes the outcome in the end。 Like a modern romantic fairy tale。

Stacy

Easy read when you’re not feeling great

So wonderful! The Ball at Versailles was a wonderful read。 So many people finding love, companionship, and fulfillment。 It took me awhile to keep the characters sorted out。 It was a little tricky for me。 But once I grasped who was who, the reading went smoothly and I thoroughly enjoyed the story。 Another home run, in my opinion!

The story started out kind of slow and confusing about so many different people but all the sudden became very interesting and hard to stop reading for the night。 DS got back on track with this story。

Another homerun by Steel。Four American debutantes, Felicity, Amelia, Caroline and Samantha, accept invitations to the most prestigious and coveted ball at Versailles in Paris, in the summer of 1960。From very different and somewhat complicated family dynamics, they bond almost at first introductions and their lives are changed from that point on。A good relaxing, easy to read story of the value of enduring friendships and how they can oftentimes, change the direction of your life。The characters an Another homerun by Steel。Four American debutantes, Felicity, Amelia, Caroline and Samantha, accept invitations to the most prestigious and coveted ball at Versailles in Paris, in the summer of 1960。From very different and somewhat complicated family dynamics, they bond almost at first introductions and their lives are changed from that point on。A good relaxing, easy to read story of the value of enduring friendships and how they can oftentimes, change the direction of your life。The characters and their background stories are extremely well defined; something Danielle always seems to get right without it ever appearing to be too laborious。Just a really good read。If you like her books as a rule, you will really like this one。 。。。more

Same brain candy as usual。Four characters were introduced, but the novel really focused only on two of them, leaving out who I thought were more interesting stories。Nice setting, the typical upper class NYC and Paris。

Beth

Steel’s writing still drives me crazy with all her repetition and tired tropes, but I continue to read her books for the escape value。
